As a trumpet player from a classical background, the IC Big Band Christmas concert was a first for me: gone were the days of dull clapping, half-hidden yawns and silent audiences; it was an affair filled with cheering, dancing and shouts of encore!
The A band kicked off the night with “Strike up the band” preparing us for Christmas classics such as “O Holy Night” and “God Rest Ye Merry Gentleman”. Having lulled the audience with the soothing sound of Sinatra, they concluded with a lively rendition of The Jazz Police. B band then made their way to the stage with a tough act to follow. We too played a selection of seasonal favourites, culminating the first half with Mariah’s masterpiece: “All I Want For Christmas Is You”! Enough to put anyone in the spirit and get the crowd singing along to us cheerfully.
By some sort of Christmas Miracle “Norwegian Wood” went entirely to plan! The big band’s incredible singers wowed the audience with their talent in the duet ‘Baby It’s Cold Outside’ and Lydia’s stylish crooning of ‘Moonriver’. ‘Uptown Big Band Funk’ upped the tempo, brought the house down and filled the dancefloor. The concert ended on a high with ‘A Big Band Christmas’. Hope you enjoyed it as much as we did and see you at the next one!
